Shoot only local matches and USPSA can feel like a closed, self-contained sport. It isn't — USPSA is the American branch of a global federation, and there's a real, structured path from a Tuesday-night club match to representing the country at a World Shoot. Here's how the pieces connect.
USPSA is the U.S. region of a worldwide sport
USPSA was formally incorporated in 1984 as the official U.S. Region of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC), the international body practical shooting answers to. Your USPSA membership carries IPSC standing along with it, which is what lets you enter IPSC-sanctioned matches held outside the country.
Two rulebooks, not one
Since 2007, USPSA has run its own rulebook separately from IPSC's rather than shooting directly under it. The two aren't identical — magazine length, power factor thresholds, and division equipment rules don't all line up — so a gun that's legal at your local match is not automatically legal at an IPSC-sanctioned event. Worth knowing before you assume your regular kit travels with you.
This year's IPSC US Nationals is a qualifier, not just a match
The 2026 IPSC US Nationals runs September 30 – October 4 at Greater Pittsburgh Gun Club in Bulger, PA. This edition does double duty: it's also one of the approved qualifying matches for the next Handgun and PCC World Shoot delegations.
How Team USA actually gets picked
Under USPSA's World Shoot Policy (effective January 1, 2026), qualifying isn't about one big match — it's shoot at least 3 of 6 approved matches spread across three years, your best 3 scores count, and you need to clear a 60% threshold. The six: the 2026 IPSC Nationals, 2026 Race Gun Nationals, 2026 Factory Gun Nationals, the 2027 IPSC Nationals, the 2027 USPSA National Championship, and the 2028 IPSC Nationals. Applications go through ipsc-usa.com ahead of a set deadline.
Where the World Shoot itself goes next
Each discipline runs its World Shoot on its own cycle. Handgun's last ran in 2025 in South Africa; the next, Handgun World Shoot XXI, is set for Italy in 2029. Shotgun World Shoot V is running this same September in Corinth, Greece. Rifle's is provisionally set for Mongolia in 2027. PCC runs its own separate qualification cycle, currently building toward 2028.
